Avengers 4 Characters Who will Die in The Upcoming Movie
Avengers: Infinity War killed a lot of people—half the universe to be exact. But, if the hints the movie dropped are to be believed—along with the rather long lineup of upcoming Marvel films—there’s still hope for the Avengers to save everyone who was lost to Thanos’ universe-dusting "snap." The victims may not even be dead, just trapped in the Soul World of the Soul Stone. Even characters that Thanos just straight-up murdered like Heimdall, Vision, and Loki have a chance of returning since Ant-Man and The Wasp teases time travel for the Avengers 4 movie. Heck, Loki's getting his own Netflix show. But in a finale this big--this epic, someone has to die, and it has to be permanently. That’s what happens in war. So, the question is, who’s it going to be?
Captain America
Chris Evans has been talking about the end of his role as Captain America for what feels like years now. He just recently sent out a melancholy tweet about how he’s officially finished filming for Avengers 4 and how he’s been honored to play Cap for eight years. Sure, he could just be sad that he’s done working on a film that’s brought together so many talented actors and potential friends, but we still have to take his history into account.
That being said, it wouldn’t be unusual to see Cap go down—even if it would be incredibly sad. In the comics, the events that happened in Civil War eventually lead to Captain America being killed. While the MCU Civil War and the comics Civil War are pretty different, their core is the same. In the MCU, Civil War has arguably had the biggest impact on the MCU's third phase when compared to any of the other movies. Tony and Cap have divided the Avengers, and they aren’t on speaking terms. Cap chose Bucky over Tony, and that was that. But before everything is said and done, this plotline has to be resolved. If Chris is going to be packing away his shield for good after Avengers 4, he may very well die fighting Thanos to save Tony, the rest of his friends, and every other living thing in the universe.
Iron Man
Now, if there’s one character whose death would just be gut-wrenching, it’s Tony Stark’s. As an audience, we’ve spent more time with Tony than we have with any other character in the MCU. The MCU basically started with this man. Not to mention, his death would mean the end of RDJ’s perfect portrayal. Watching him go down would be as bad, if not worse, than watching Hugh Jackman officially die as Wolverine (spoilers by the way). But Iron Man has been known to be a self-sacrificing kind of hero. He’s also one who’s extremely motivated by guilt. It’s the reason he continued being Iron Man after surviving being kidnapped, and it’s the reason he built Ultron after being shown the death of his team. The man has a hard time believing that not everything is his fault, and with the way things ended in Infinity War--Peter Parker dying in his arms, Doctor Strange sacrificing himself to save him, half of all sentient life being destroyed on his watch—yeah, he’s definitely going to be willing to risk everything to undo what happened.
Thanos
Thanos made a LOT of enemies in Infinity War, having killed half of the universe and all, and in the end, the film gave him a somewhat happy ending, allowing him to bask in the glow of a beautiful sunset after having just committed mass murder. To be able to get away with something like that must feel good, even if it cost him the only person he ever loved. Still, his aggressors are some of the most powerful beings in the universe, and with his all of his children now deceased and the Infinity Gauntlet ruined, he’s going to have to face them all alone. Now, Thanos may not be a pushover, but he has died before—at least in the comics. He’s been killed by Adam Warlock, Drax the Destroyer, and even himself. While the first and the last possibility are more than likely not going to happen in Avengers 4, Drax is still a prime candidate for the job if he and the rest of the heroes dusted by the Infinity Gauntlet make a return. If Drax doesn’t do it, then Tony’s made Thanos bleed his own blood before, and Thor has made the Mad Titan a pretty likely and convincing promise. Besides, when has a memorable MCU villain ever survived being an MCU villain? Loki and Bucky don’t count.
Nebula
Nebula is a very, very, very emotionally stunted individual--and for a good reason. She was repeatedly tortured and dismantled by some deranged stranger calling himself her father. Her need for revenge has made her a giant pain in Gamora’s butt. But the two shared some reconciliation in the second Guardian’s movie. Just when Nebula was starting to want to be Gamora’s sister again, however, Gamora sacrificed herself to Thanos in order to save Nebula’s life. Losing that connection in the way that she did must have most certainly erased any emotional growth she may have had. Now, Nebula has nothing to lose and will most likely be devoting her life back to killing Thanos—not that she ever really stopped. Her need for revenge is going to be at an all-time high, and considering how reckless can she be, there’s no doubt she’ll charge Thanos without thinking it through. Thanos has dispatched people like the Hulk and survived Thor’s rage. If Nebula does what’s expected of her, there’s no doubt she’s going to die.
Drax The Destroyer
Yes, Drax has already “died” along with half the universe, but there’s a solid chance that he’ll be back to bless our ears with his over-the-top belly laughs. The thing is though, Drax’s main reason for living is to take revenge against Thanos for killing his wife and daughter. So, if he does manage to come back, he’s probably just going to die again. Drax has already shown that he is more than willing to risk his life and the lives of others—albeit unintentionally—just for a chance at killing Thanos. When it comes to outright reckless behavior, Drax is in the same boat as Nebula. Still, as we mentioned before, Drax has a history of actually murdering Thanos--unlike Nebula. At the end of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy run, Drax puts his hand through Thanos’ chest and tears out the Mad Titan’s heart. We could get a repeat performance of this in the MCU, but it’s unlikely. It took Thor’s Stormbreaker, a weapon capable of fending off all six Infinity Stones, just to pierce Thanos’ hide, and if the fantastic advice Thanos’ gave Thor is evidence of anything, it’s that Drax is going to want to aim for the head, not the chest.
Hawkeye
Honestly, Hawkeye’s just on this list because we can see him being that one guy who is only a day away from retirement or comes out of retirement to help and ends up dying because of it. It just seems like something that would happen to him with his luck.
