Avengers 4 Release Date Just Changed EVERYTHING

Published on

Sadly, the Avengers 4 trailer didn’t drop on the 5th like we were lead to believe. This date itself was the result of a scheduling change on Disney and Marvel’s part anyway, so there’s also that to take into account. Initially, the trailer was supposed to air on Monday during the football game, but this date was subsequently swapped for the premiere of the second Captain Marvel trailer instead. Why the studios decided to do this is unknown, but it’s likely because the trailer dates were leaked. Still, though, it has been all but confirmed that the trailer should be airing on Friday of this week.

Disney and Marvel decided to change the date to Friday, December 7th, so that the trailer wouldn’t take any attention away from George W Bush’s funeral. You know, because of respect and all of that. But make no mistake, the trailer is coming. Our state of suspense is drawing to a close. After all of the missed dates and incorrect speculation and rumors, the trailer does have a confirmed date for this week.

On Friday, December 7th at 9 am on the official Marvel youtube page, the official Avengers 4 trailer will go up.

It does seem a bit weird for Marvel to release something as massive as Avengers 4 right alongside something as unfamiliar in comparison as Captain Marvel. The idea sounds like a really good way to cannibalize your own audience by drawing attention away from a film that is not only coming out sooner than Avengers 4 but is also much more obscure—in a way.

The character of Captain Marvel hasn’t premiered on the big screen in any kind of capacity as large as her 2019 release. In fact, she hasn’t premiered at all in a live-action setting. On the other hand, pretty much everyone knows about the current MCU Avengers and wants to see what’s happening next with them. With that being said, however, there is a way airing both trailers back to back can work in favor for both of them, and this idea is probably what Marvel is banking on.

Speculation Behind the Trailer

Airing both trailers this close to one another could be Marvel’s way of letting us know that Captain Marvel will be appearing in the upcoming Avengers 4 trailer. If this is the case, letting Captain Marvel’s trailer playout beside the Avengers 4 trailer could build more awareness for her character and convince more people to take a look at her movie in order to better prepare themselves for Avengers 4 (you probably think people already know to do this, but you'd be surprised). This makes even more sense when you consider the fact that she didn’t have an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War.

With this in mind, the Avengers 4 trailer just might show more new footage than we originally thought. Infinity War was very secretive about its contents when it was in development (aside from that one screw up by Mark Ruffalo), and Avengers 4 has been even more adamant in this regard. To give you an idea of just how much so: Avengers 4 was rebranded its own movie about four years ago instead of continuing under the banner of “Infinity War Part 2,” and yet despite all of that time, we still have no idea what the actual title of the movie is. All we have is speculation and rumor, and that’s with the movie being only six months away from its release date.

So, considering that, a lot of fans believed that the first trailer would only show the bare minimum of what makes it into the actual movie, relying more instead on footage from Infinity War. Another common thought was that the trailer would use new footage but a lot of it would be specific to the trailer itself rather than stuff we would actually see in the film (think the Infinity War trailer scene at the end where the Hulk is running with the rest of the Avengers out in Wakanda).

But, with Captain Marvel now being showcased as Avengers 4’s partner in crime, it would make sense we see a decent amount of new content with the upcoming trailer. While Avengers 4 is considered a separate film from Infinity War now, it is still a direct continuation of Infinity War's aftermath, so if new heroes just suddenly popped up next to the heroes we saw in Infinity War, it could be confusing for the general audience.

As with most Marvel trailers you can expect a voiceover, some have speculated that Tony will be the one to do the honors this time around, or for the trailer to start with the conversation Thanos and Gamora had back in the Soul World right after Thanos swept away half of all sentient life. Regardless, the upcoming trailer begs the question of what exactly it will reveal.

What Will the Trailer Reveal?

First things first, will we finally get the title of this movie? Four years is definitely a long enough wait to find out, and while the Russo’s trolly puzzles have been fun to play around with, I think we speak for everyone at this point when we say we’re ready for a definitive answer. “Endgame,” “Annihilation” and “Eternity,” are nice and all, but it’s time to know what exactly should we call this movie. A title reveal might be anticipated thing about this trailer, and we don’t think that can be said about most movies if any at all.

What will the new world that Thanos has created look like? Will we learn anything about how the heroes are dealing with it? These are some of the biggest questions Infinity War left behind when it closed out, especially since its subsequent movies Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel take place either during or before the events of the film. Because of that, we have no idea what the exact results of Thanos’ actions were on the rest of the world. Everything should have immediately fallen into chaos, right? You can't just wipe out half of the earth’s population and not expect there to be even more destruction. Not everyone was just relaxing when the “snap” went off. There were people performing construction on buildings, driving vehicles of some sort, chasing criminals, operating on patients, etcetera. Are we going to see all of that? And if we do, are we going to see the Avengers trying to handle all of it while in their grief-stricken states, or are we going to skip ahead a few years into the future and see the results? Either option is thrilling to think about.

Finally, will we have a change in release dates? Infinity War was originally supposed to come out on May 4th but instead got pushed up to April 27th. With Avengers 4 having a mid-May release, will it too see a schedule change with this new trailer? I don’t think anyone would complain; we know we were certainly happy with Infinity War premiering earlier.

Whatever the case may be with this trailer, we only have until the fifth or seventh of this month to have all of our questions answered.
