Avengers: Endgame Actor CONFIRMS The Loss In Infinity War Will Be Undone?!
It happened again—another Marvel actor slipped up. That’s twice in less than two weeks. Funny, enough, it wasn’t, Mark, Tom, or Sam this time—yet another new spoiler has joined the fray. This time it was Cobie Smulders, the actor behind Mariah Hill, Nick Fury’s right-hand agent.
The Interview
A few days ago, Cobie had an interview with Jimmy Fallon in order to promote the second season of her show Friends From College. But of course, her being part of the MCU and all, Jimmy had to press a little on what she knows about their upcoming films. For the most part, she stayed tight-lipped throughout the interview but near the very end Jimmy Fallon asked her if she would be in the new Spider-Man Far From Home movie, to which she replied: “Yes.”
Like we are, Jimmy reacted as though this was a big reveal—being overly dramatic, poking fun at Cobie a little, and just generally hyping things up, but like she said, this was kind of already out there. But the fact that she even is in Far From Home is still important. After all, both her character and Sam Jack’s Nick Fury were dusted from existence last we saw them on screen.
Let’s talk about it.
As we all know, the climax of Infinity War resolved with the deaths of multiple characters. Of these characters, three have already been revealed to be back amongst the living: Spider-Man, Nick Fury, and Mariah Hill. Of course, fans of the MCU already had an idea this would be the case, or at least should have. None of the original Avengers members died. If they had, it would make more sense to wonder whether or not they would be back to for round two in Endgame. The Infinity War story started with them after all. Only makes sense they would stick around to finish it. This is clearly their story and the secondary members of the Avengers are just along for ride (for now at least). The latest additions to the Avengers team have all had movies that have done very well financially. Money is king in Hollywood, so there’s no way Marvel was just going to permanently kill off their new cash cows. Besides these characters do originate from comic books, the medium that kills them off all the time only to bring them back sooner rather than later in some convoluted way, shape, or form.
But in this instance, the circumstances surrounding their resurrection are a bit unclear. Marvel was kind of blindsided by Sony when they decided to go ahead and deliberately state that Far From Home happens after Infinity War through Amy Pascal, so they do have to be really picky about how they choose to handle, Far From Home’s press. Amy’s comments happened some time ago though, before the release of Infinity War even, so Marvel may have taken some steps to change things up in order to compensate.
The overall point though is that we don’t have any idea how Endgame affects Spider-Man’s personal world. All the promotions we’ve seen of the movie don’t mention it or deal with it all; they focus solely on the solo story of Spidey. In fact, the only thing we as an audience have to tie Far From Home to Endgame is a theory, which, for all intents and purposes, is a reach.
The Far From Home teaser trailer was just released to the world and it does, in fact, confirm that Spider-Man left his Stark suit at home because he just wanted a vacation with his friends. Fans assumed that Peter’s decision was tied to the fact that he was murdered in Infinity War, and he’s still trying to process that—getting away from Spider-Man for a little bit is just one of his ways of coping. Again, this is just a theory, though, he could have left his suit at home solely to give himself guaranteed time with MJ.
So since we don’t know anything about the connections between Far From Home and Infinity War, but do know that Cobie is reprising her role as Mariah despite having been dusted, the question becomes: “how do these characters come back?” What exactly happens in Endgame that leads to their resurrection? From a marketing standpoint, yes, it makes sense that Marvel hasn’t shown any ties between the two films. If it were up to them, Spider-Man’s sequel definitely wouldn’t be coming out only a few months after Endgame, which effectively forces them to market the movie, despite Spider-Man’s death.
But it is weird that there doesn’t seem to be any aftermath or consequences to Infinity War in the Far From Home trailer. Even characters like MJ and Ned seem to be completely emotionally intact. Half of the world had just been wiped out, and even during the time people were turning into dust, helicopters were falling from the sky, cars were crashing—it was chaos. So does this mean the resolution to Endgame is that the movie has time wound so far back that none of the dusted characters even remember being dusted? That would suck. Did literally everyone just agree that they would never speak of the incident again? That’s unlikely. We don’t know how Endgame ends, and Marvel is making sure to keep their secrets buried under wraps as best they can in light of the hand they’ve been dealt with Far From Home.
