Avengers: Endgame LEAK CONFIRMS Fan Theories For The Movie
It happened. One of the actors of Endgame slipped up (or maybe effed up is more appropriate for this particular actor). They didn’t just screw up for Endgame either. This spoiler even affects Captain Marvel’s upcoming movie. No, it wasn’t Mark Ruffalo or Tom Holland this time. Go figure. This time it was Samuel L. Jackson.
We normally joke about the spoiler warnings in these (because why would you be checking out Avengers 4 content if you didn’t want potential spoilers). But this time is real. There are spoilers ahead for both Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame. Turn back now if you want to avoid them. If your still here, let’s get into it.
Samuel L. Jackson Interview
Entertainment Tonight had Samuel L Jackson over for an interview on January 8th to discuss his upcoming MCU movies. In the interview, Mr. Jackson said, and we quote: “She’s pretty much the strongest character--in terms of someone with powers are able to go things--in the Marvel Universe. So for Carol Danvers to be that person and for Brie to become that person, it’s going to be a dynamite thing I mean, [the Avengers] are up against some really, really tough odds right now--we saw that throughout Infinity War--so now we know we something that’s as powerful as Thanos. And at some point, we’ll find out how powerful she is and all the things that she’s capable of. She’s one of the few people in the Marvel Universe that can time travel, so...”
Stop, there is it is. Let’s take a look again at that last line. “She one of the few people in the Marvel Universe that can time travel.”
What? Captain Marvel can time travel in the MCU? For those of you who are unfamiliar with Captain Marvel’s power set, we’ll tell you now that she does not have the innate ability to move through time either or forwards or backwards. She cannot time travel on her own in the comics. If she’s capable of doing that here, that would definitely be a liberty the MCU has taken with her character, and it’s a pretty big liberty--one that would require a pretty dramatic reveal.
We already knew from Ant-Man and the Wasp that time travel was going to play some kind of role in Avengers: Endgame (because why mention time vortexes and strand Scott in the Quantum realm if you weren’t going to have him explore said time vortexes). But this interview with Samuel confirms that the Carol is now somehow connected to time traveling as well. It implies a few things about her character that were unprecedented before.
Captain Marvel
In the comics, Captain Marvel received her abilities when a Kree machine known as the Psyche-Magnetron blew up in her face and merged her DNA with a man named Mar-Vell. We’ve always suspected that things would go a bit different in the movies since it's been so hard to get any confirmation on Mar-Vell’s character, but now we know Carol’s powers are different.
Recently, Marvel released to us a Captain Marvel special look that gave us a closer look of her being hit in the face with the purportedly life-changing explosion that gave her, her powers. Some people have suspected that the energy she was hit with in this trailer (and past trailers) was quantum energy, but they never had any ground to stand on other than the fact the energies look similar. But if we take Mr. Jackson’s interview and apply it to this theory, it starts to look a lot more concrete.
Hank Pim has said that the quantum realm doesn’t care about the rules of time and space, or at least that they’re irrelevant to someone who’s shrinking for eternity. Despite this though, we know from Janet Van Dyn that time travel is possible through the time vortexes that the realm creates. So if Carol really is being infused with quantum energy in this scene instead of something specific to the Kree, then it would make sense that she has time travel abilities. How does she come in contact with quantum energy, though? Was she possibly dispatched to handle the missile that Janet took care of back in Hank’s story? Did something else happen that he left out to cause Carol to get her powers? What do the Kree know about the quantum realm? Do they know about the quantum realm? Can they shrink Ant-Man? Did Hank Pim steal the quantum realm technology from them? How does Captain Marvel connect to all of this?
Those are questions for another time, though. The question for now: how do these abilities play a role in Endgame? We assumed Scott Lang had the whole “time travel” aspect under his belt. We assumed Captain Marvel was going to be sticking to her deep space or “cosmic universe” roots and that they the reason she wasn’t on earth currently. We assumed she was off doing spacey things. But, if she’s a time traveler now, that changes--well...the dynamic of pretty much everything. Maybe Nick Fury’s pager was meant to contact her in the past, not in deep space. Maybe Nick didn’t want to contact her because she was off doing something throughout time was even more important. Maybe instead of saving Tony, she’s the one who saved Scott. Maybe Scott’s the reason she’s introduced to the Avengers. Honestly, this revelation raises so many more questions than answers, you can’t help but wonder if Mr. Jackson screwed up or said this stuff on purpose.
