How Spider-Man Far From Home Will Change Everything

Published on

The marketing for Spider-Man Far From Home is still in full swing. Right on the heels of the Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame trailers, the Homecoming sequel has reportedly dropped a trailer of its own. It made a rather welcomed appearance at Brazil’s comic con along with a host of other Marvel related content (including a never before seen clip from Captain Marvel). The trailer has yet to be aired for the rest of us peasants, but most believe it should be gracing the internet around next week.

With that being said, the kind royals who did see the trailer have been posting descriptions of it online, and from the looks of things, the movie will be delivering some promising content. So~we decided to go ahead and break down what things you can possibly expect from this upcoming Spider-Man installment, and how exactly Far From Home will change the status quo of MCU’s Spider-Man.

Change In May’s Relationship Status?

So, weirdly enough, it seems Aunt May, may or may not be getting back into dating game in this movie. To make things even stranger, Happy seems to be her new partner. Yes--Tony Stark’s Happy, the one Peter had some entertaining conversations with back in Homecoming.

This is apparently the first topic addressed at the beginning of the trailer, but there seem to be two wildly different descriptions depicting what exactly goes down between the two characters. One description says that May and Happy are having a flat out love affair, and the other description claims that Happy is just flirting with her.

Now, if we’re being honest, the second description sounds like the much more believable situation considering Happy and Aunt May have never even been on screen together, but we’ll have to wait for the trailer itself to come out in order to see. Still, you can believe that if the former is case Peter’s relationship with Happy is going to become a lot more complicated.

New Spider-Man Suits?

The next segment of the trailer displays Peter packing up for his field trip in Europe and notably leaving his Spidey suit at home. He apparently does this because he wants to use this field trip as a vacation from superhero-ing, which makes sense if the events of Infinity War happened before this movie since, you know, he was disintegrated. He’s earned some downtime, and it would probably be the best thing for him.

However, because of this decision, he doesn’t have his gear when Nick Fury “ninjas” his ways into his room, tranqs Ned, and offers to bring Peter onboard a covert assignment. Peter obviously makes the decision to go with Nick since there are photos of the two of them riding in a speedboat together with Peter suited up as his better half.

How exactly Nick manages to changes Peter’s mind about not being Spider-Man for a few days isn’t exactly detailed, but it’s probably a good guess to assume that Peter was starstruck over the fact that the world’s greatest super spy just broke into his place of rest and tranqed his best friend. We know we would be.

In the trailer, Nick apparently shows Peter a few suits that he can choose from, including the black stealth suit that's appeared in leaked photos.

So, if you were hoping that Peter would be channeling his inner comic book self and making his own gear from now on, you may just have to wait a little longer. From the sound of things--and photos that have already been leaked--the black stealth suit Peter has in this movie definitely isn’t his big-time stealth suit that can manipulate light and sound, so maybe the events of this film will inspire him to upgrade to that later on down the line.

Mysterio and Hydro-Man Motivations

Finally, the trailer wraps itself up with the appearance of Mysterio, but the meeting between him and Spider-Man goes in a completely different direction than anticipated. Apparently, instead of beating the snot out of each other, Spider-Man and Mysterio team up to beat the snot out of Hydro-Man.

This took fans for a loop since Mysterio was suspected to be Far From Home’s main villain. He still is, mind you, it apparently just didn’t cross people’s minds that he and Spider-Man would have an initial sequence where they work together instead of against each other.

And it’s not like fans are wrong to be surprised in this situation because, in the comics, Quentin Beck’s Mysterio was originally a special effects wizard working in Hollywood. When he believed his job wasn't getting him anywhere, he decided to use his talents to become a supervillain. So this new tidbit of information puts a new spin on Mysterio’s character.

How exactly he comes to be in the ploy of Nick Fury is sure to generate a story of its own and give us more insight into both of the characters. This would be especially nice since Nick has been more or less off the grid lately, and Mysterio’s likely to be more interesting as a character since his new origin is connected with Fury.

Possible Sinister 6 Setup?

As we all know, Marvel wanted to go in a new direction with the supervillains that make an appearance in Spider-Man. They want to avoid using repeat villains that have already popped up in other movies--a way to differentiate their franchise from the others since this is the second reboot in less than ten years.

This is the reason why we haven’t been introduced to anyone in the Osborn family despite them playing such pivotal roles in Peter’s life. They are the Green Goblin and the New Goblin respectably, and both of their villainous personas have appeared in the other two Spider-Man trilogies already (since the Amazing Spider-Man didn’t make it to a third movie, maybe it’s better to call that one a “duology?”).

The point is, is that Marvel feels the characters and their stories have appeared too often on the big screen, and they want to go in a different direction. So, if that’s their mindset, we should keep in mind that they very well may avoid recharacterizing people like Doc Ock since he was the villain in Spider-Man 2 and that movie is considered to be one of the greatest superhero films of all time. Redoing him in this new franchise could be met with backlash, but at the same time, if Marvel wanted to go in that direction, they should have built up enough clout by now to be trusted with it.

All that being said though, three of the original Sinister Six members have already appeared on screen in this new Spider-Man trilogy: Vulture, Scorpion, and now Mysterio (if you missed Scorpion’s appearance, he was in the end credits scene of Homecoming talking to Vulture).

And while Hydroman isn’t an original member, he’s appeared on later iterations of the team, so he could be counted as the fourth member (Spider-Man PS4 got away with Mister Negative, and he’s never appeared in any of sinister six formations).

It looks like a Sinister Six is what Marvel is building up too, and while Doc Ock may not be on the team, the act of six of Spider-Man's greatest rogues teaming up to take him down would create the first supervillain team of the MCU.
