Superbowl Avengers: Endgame Trailer You Missed This INTENSE Part
As per usual, the super bowl, ad paradise that it is, showed off trailers and teasers for some of the biggest movies and titles that’ll be coming out this year. A 30 second teaser dropped for the upcoming Avengers film and it has some pretty good content for what it is.
Let’s talk about it.
Speed Shots
The teaser starts off with a quick session of shots. Don’t blink or you’ll miss them. Each shot depicts different members or allies of the Avengers who didn’t make it out of Infinity War. Also, each shot is stylized after the black and red color scheme of MCU10-year anniversary logo (when the rest of the logo has been dusted and the red ten radiates the black backdrop). The recently released concept art followed this black and red scheme too. It’s a nice little way to emphasize the ten years of success that Marvel has had with their movies. None of the scenes are new either, their all taken from previous shots seen in other movies.
Slowing the speed of series down, the first shot is of Hope (the Wasp) from the end of the original Ant-Man. The second is of Nick Fury from the beginning of the first Avengers. The third is of Spider-Man in his famous Civil War debut. The fourth--Doctor Strange in the moment he dons the cloak of levitation. The fifth is of Falcon just after he uses his wings for the first time. The sixth shows Wanda (Scarlet Witch) protecting Vision from the Black Order in Infinity War. There’s a seventh that shows off the entire Guardians of the Galaxy team from when they first assembled in the original movie. This one’s the oddity of the group since it shows Rocket, who is definitely still alive in Endgame, but because it’s a 30 second teaser, Marvel probably didn’t want to eat its time with individual shots of the entire decreased guardians team, and probably couldn’t find a shot that had everyone aside from Rocket. The eighth shot shows T’Challa first entering Shuri’s lab in Black Panther. The ninth shows off Bucky (Winter Soldier) catching Cap’s shield throw with one hand in...well, the Winter Soldier. Finally, the last shot shows Vision in his decent to meet Ultron.
Post Snap New York
The next thing we see is something we’ve been waiting for since the post-credits scene of Infinity War when cars were crashing and helicopters were falling out of the sky--we get to see the world post snap, and man, do things look bleak and horrible--just the way we like it. So we get a head-on shot of the manhattan island, and overlook of the statue of liberty, and a birds eye of Citi Field stadium. There is no sunshine here. The atmosphere and mood displayed by just the sky here says everything you need to know about the current situation: the world is in the toilet, and everyone is having a hard time coping. You can even look further in some of these shots if you want to for more emphasis. In both the statue of liberty shot and the Citi Field shot, you see nothing but a collection of vehicles. Boats in the liberty shot, and cars in the citi shot. No people--just vehicles. We also get the start of Cap’s voiceover for the teaser.
Bereavement Counseling
Going from outside to in, the first thing we see is a poster displaying “Where do we go, now that they’re gone.” Cap’s voice over also finishes the line: “some people move on.” We can also see what looks like a group counseling in the background: a bunch of people sitting on chairs in a circle. We then get a shot of cap in this same room, and he looks like he is struggling to hold back his anger. Either he just heard something he didn’t agree with or he’s in the middle of getting something off of his chest. Either way, these shots give us an idea that a good deal of time has passed, at least enough so that the chaos has died down and people are now organizing grief counseling. Cap follows his voiceline with: “But not us.”
Tony and Nebula
The trailer picks up it’s pace here and races to its end with a series of different shots. The first is probably the most fun as it depicts Tony and Nebula. If you scrutinized the original Endgame trailer, you probably noticed Nebula comforting Tony with a hand to the shoulder. Now it seems like the two of them really have bonded--what with being alone and about to die in the vacuum of space. Tony seems to be doing Tony-like things and is hard at work repairing something or other (either the ship or his armor) in a fashion very remencient to his original Iron Man days, back when he had built the Mark One armor. He didn’t have a lab then and had to work with what he had on hand--same thing he’s doing here. Nebula even looks like she’s helping as his lab assistant (here’s hoping she doesn’t die like his last one). We’ve been speculating who would save Tony, but maybe he’s a strong, independant, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist who don’t need no heroes.
Outside Avengers tower
The next shot shows Cap, Black Widow, Bruce and Rodey walking out into the fields of Avengers HQ and looking up into the sky with wonder. Considering the last scene before this, maybe they’re seeing Iron and Nebula arriving? Maybe Captain Marvel is greeting them? Maybe Thor is coming back with lunch?
Rocket and the Hut
We cut from Cap’s group to see Rocket entering a hut of some sort. Rocket’s not from Earth, and we don’t believe there’s been any mention of him having history with the planet, so he’s either here for someone else, visiting an Avenger whose decided to be a loner (Thor), or went with Thor to whatever Wakandan-looking area we see him in later in the trailer.
Target Practice
Black Widow, in all of her rage, is shooting up paper targets. We see that despite the look of anger on her face, her shots still create tight clusters. It’s almost like sees preparing for a confrontation in the this scene.
War Machine and Ant Man Suit Up
Just like Widow, Ant-Man and War Machine look like their preparing for something as they drop the face plates of their helmets. The office-like area that the pair are standing in makes it seem like they’re still in Avengers HQ, so maybe they’re testing their equipment? They could be facing a potential invader, but that doesn’t seem likely since Thanos is no longer actively going after after them.
Thor
We get two quick shots of Thor: one with him looking into something giving off light, and another with him walking out of a tunnel or hall of some sort into what looks to be Wakanda. He’s completely geared up in this scene--cape and all--so wherever he is, he’s looking to take care of some businesses.
Ronin/Hawkeye
We get a quick shot of Hawkeye in an underground tunnel of some sort looking at the sorce of a bright red light. Some think this may be Ultron, but it’s hard to imagine what kind of role Ultron would play in a movie like this.
Captain America’s Shield
Last but not least of the quick series, we see Captain America strapping on his shield with a shaking hand. This is probably the most intense scene of the teaser.
There are a number of reasons Cap’s hand could be shaking here, but considering, and their probably all happening at the same time. Cap gave up the shield in Infinity War when he realized Tony made a valid point about him being worthy of it (having protected the killer of the man who made it). So the fact that he’s wielding one now, probably means that the two of them are back on speaking terms, that combined with the anger Cap must feel at having lost to Thanos, could all be playing a role in why his hand is shaking: he’s ready to be Captain America again, and work with his remaining family to make things right.
March Through HQ
Finally, we get a shot of all the Avengers on earth marching through a hanger of Avengers HQ. The only one missing being the Hulk, but there’s a giant space between Ant-Man and War Machine that suggests that maybe, he’s going to be added in later? If we are actually getting professor Hulk in this movie, that would make sense. It’s not like they haven’t added and removed the Hulk in past trailers.
