Why Deadpool Will Be Introduced Into Spider-Man Future Movies

Published on

Deadpool is the best thing to come out of Fox having rights over certain Marvel heroes. He’s the one thing they did right that would be in Disney and Marvel’s best interest not to reboot. We’d include Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Patrick Stewart's Charles Xavier in this as well, but they don’t have the benefit of being carried over to Disney and Marvel’s lineup.

Fox screwed Deadpool up in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but they redeemed themselves with Deadpool’s solo outings. Ironically enough, they pulled off this redemption with the same actor who was unfortunate enough to play Deadpool in Origins: Ryan Reynolds. Despite the first epic fail, Ryan has easily proven that he’s the best actor for the role. Cutting him would be a mistake, one that would only result in outrage from loyal fans and other needless headaches. Disney and Marvel seem to know this, which is why Ryan is the only Fox actor who will apparently be staying around after Disney’s absorption of Fox.

What does that mean, though? Will Deadpool be joining the MCU, fighting alongside its popular hero adaptations in upcoming Avengers blockbusters? He could. He might. If he does the only question remaining would be, “how do we properly integrate him into the MCU?” We have a few ideas. The primary one dealing with a certain webhead.

Spider-Man: Far From Home Multiverse

Far From Home is hinting that it’ll be introducing the multiverse concept to the MCU. You probably know how this goes by now: an MCU multiverse would open up the possibility of introducing other movie universes to the MCU, which, of course, would include all of the previously established Fox properties. Deadpool is the primary property that comes to mind in this situation. He’s already experienced life-altering time travel so he probably won’t even flinch to discover that there’s a multiverse too. Considering it’s Deadpool and he has fourth wall knowledge, he quite possibly even already knows about the multiverse. If Marvel and Disney wanted to, they could even integrate Fox’s X-Men into the MCU. It’d be the worst idea they’ve had for the universe, but they could do it. Unless they just wanted to bring back Logan’s X-23. She was cool.

Far From Home wouldn’t even have to be the Spider-Man movie that introduced Deadpool. All we need Far From Home for in this case is to give us a visually tangible multiverse, to give us a way to get Ryan’s Deadpool into the MCU. The movie could even just tease Deadpool after the multiverse reveal is confirmed to be real -- just show Deadpool blowing kissing at us from beyond some spectral wall.

Introducing Deadpool in Far From Home wouldn’t be very productive anyway. Far From Home is supposed to the finale to phase 3 of the MCU, or maybe “epilogue” is the better word in this case. Far From Home is supposed to focus on Peter taking up Tony Stark’s responsibilities, so throwing in someone as hyperactive and attention-grabbing as Deadpool would only be a good way to take away from a story that’s supposed to rightfully be Peter’s. Still, the second movie of MCU trilogies do like to be duet movies, so a Deadpool appearance wouldn’t be completely unheard of in this case. We talk all the time about Iron Man and War Machine in Iron Man 2, Captain America and Falcon in the Winter Soldier, and Ant-Man and the Wasp in Ant-Man and the Wasp -- all the second movies in their trilogies, and all the first movies to introduce their superhero partners.

But It would make more sense if Deadpool instead appeared in something like Spider-Man 3. That film is far enough into the future where anything can happen since we don’t have a real idea of where the MCU is currently going or what it’s trying to do. Far From Home looks like it already has enough on it’s plate than to also try and fully incorporate another full hero over the course of its story.

Spider-Man and Deadpool Are Best Buddies...Sort Of

All that said, there’s a reason we assume that Deadpool would appear in a Spider-Man movie if he were to appear at all. Deadpool and Spider-Man are best buddies in the comics. They’ve gone on all sorts of crazy adventures together. Okay, yes, “best buddies” might be a bit of a reach. Spider-Man, like nearly every other Marvel comic character, can’t stand Deadpool. Their friendship tends to be one-sided, but there’s still no other major superhero in Marvel that Deadpool teams up with more than Spidey. They have their own running joint-comic series together after all.

Deadpool looks up to Spider-Man. He sees Spidey as his role model because Spider-Man shows a self-restraint that Deadpool just can’t seem to find for himself. Deadpool’s quick to kill a bunch of people, but Spider-Man just does the exact opposite. If the MCU is going to imitate this relationship between Spider-Man and Deadpool at all, it’s going to take a little time. Deadpool can’t just show up on the scene and already be smitten with Spider-Man because Spider-Man doesn’t exist in his world. They’re going to need to have an adventure together and Far From Home just isn’t the platform for it.

Aside from the “full plate,” Far From Home also has another little wrinkle with introducing Deadpool into the MCU. Spider-Man is still a high schooler. We don’t think there are any instances of Spidey and Deadpool teaming up while Pete is still in this phase of his life. We expect Peter will be graduating soon but that’s not happening in Far From Home, at least not until the end of the movie. Deadpool normally hangs out with grownup Spider-Man, and for good reason. Deadpool is not the kind of hero who needs to be doing his “superheroing” around a high school filled with kids. That scenario just won’t work out for anyone involved. It’s definitely the kind of situation you want to avoid.

Why Deadpool Probably Won’t Be In The MCU At All

Deadpool’s pretty violent--like, very, very violent. And if his violence wasn’t intense enough, the man has already shown his baby testicles to the world. To say the tone of his movies aren’t in tune with those of the MCU would be a very big understatement. Don’t get us wrong, the MCU isn’t shy about killing people and indulging in violence itself, but it doesn't do it on the same level as Deadpool. It’s at least classy about it. None of the movies are bloodbaths. We may see Captain America kill a man with an unnecessary superpowered throw of his already unbreakable shield, but, at worse, the blow is ambiguous when it connects with his victims’ head. We may see Thor quite literally chop a purple’s head off but at least there we weren’t shown the blood. We may see Iron Man set a bunch of people on fire with flamethrowers, but we don’t get any close-ups of the guys screaming as their flesh burns. At least not for very long…. You know what, on second thought, Deadpool might actually fit in very well with the MCU.

All joking aside, Deadpool is rated R for a reason. It’s just the style that the character functions best in. His movies would be nowhere near as popular if they hadn’t given him that rating. It’s like trying to imagine Login but as a PG13 movie. It just doesn’t work because the main characters only thrive when they get to do what they do best: chop people into bloody pieces. Deadpool makes lewd jokes; he blows peoples’ heads off with guns; he chops peoples heads off with katanas. He’s not a family-friendly guy unless being family friendly somehow ties into his more twisted sense of humor.

So then imagine throwing Deadpool in with the rest of the MCU roster, working with them, doing everything he does without censor next to an MCU hero. Doctor Strange used to cut people up and sow them back together for a living, but you can bet no one in the audience would be surprised if they saw him looking a bit perplexed as Deadpool ran around in Strange’s movie spilling blood all over the place by shooting and butchering a bunch of people. It would be surreal. The whole scene would be strikingly out of place. Yet you can’t have a good Deadpool portrayal without this level of violence. Again, this is just the kind of character who thrives on that kind of thing.

The only answer left then is that Deadpool won’t be joining the MCU. Sure, Disney and Marvel will still own him, but he won’t be a part of the bigger picture. The most we will probably get of Deadpool in relation to the MCU is Deadpool cracking fourth wall-breaking jokes about the whole situation. He’ll talk about how he’s the only Disney’s princesses that can’t go any of the balls to dance with the others because he’s severely dysfunctional and would end up reducing the place to a graveyard before the clock ever struck 12. He’ll joke about all the possible ways he could be apart of the MCU, and all the ways the two of them would ruin each other. He’d just make fun of everything.

Warp Up

It’s great that Deadpool is back under Marvel’s control cinematically. Fox did a very job with him in the end, but we think it’s going to be interesting to see how Marvel handles him as a R-rated film. Because he’ll have to stay R-rated, there’s no way this current generation of Deadpool movies can survive if their ratings are anything less. Still this poses a pretty major problem with inducing Deadpool into the MCU. The man is just too violent, and if not, his sexual content is definitely raunchy enough to guarantee that he’ll never share the same spotlight with MCU heroes such as Spider-Man and Doctor Strange on the big screen.

Still, if by some act of God Deadpool does end up in the MCU with all of his crudeness in tact, then the best place for him to make an appearance would be in a Spider-Man movie. Deadpool just has way too much history with the character to appear anywhere else. And if it’s not in a Spider-Man specific film, it at least has to be one where Spidey is a major player.

We think Far From Home offers the best possible method to get Deadpool inducted into the MCU because it might introduce the multiverse. The fact that Mysterio is the one presenting the theory makes it suspect, but you never know. Spider-Man is known for being a multiversal hero, if any of the Marvel movies were going to bring the concept to the forefront of the MCU’s storylines, it would definitely be Spider-Man. Spider-Man is just the main ingredient needed to get Fox Deadpool over to the MCU.

And, if all else fails, Deadpool still has his jokes. He may not end up in the MCU, but he can always talk and drop hints about how he’s right next door to it. He breaks the fourth wall. Now that copyright infringement isn’t a worry for him anymore, Deadpool can just have a ball when it comes to his jokes. He could even reference how he nevers gets to hang out with other superheroes. First Wolverine goes off and dies on him before they can do a teamup movie together, and no the MCU won’t accept him because he’s too “provocative.” He can’t win for losing.

Regardless of what happens with Deadpool, we at least know that Disney and Marvel are smart enough to stay out of the characters way and let him do what he wants. He’s proven that he can make them money without them trying to edit who is. So, at the very least we know that Ryan’s Deadpool isn’t going to be watered down for any reason at all.
